Abstract

Indonesian elementary school students show their motivation to write. A kind of books written by and for children of their age, commonly termed as Kecil-Kecil Punya Karya (KKPK) ‘although young we have writing works’, are nowdays available at bookstores. These books can further motivate other children to compose. To accommodate this motivation, the language center of Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta held a writing contest for elementary school students in Surakarta and the surrounding area. Thirtyfour students participated the contest, thus 34 texts from such a competition were collected as the object of analysis in this study to see the quality of the text structure as well as the text texture of the texts. The analysis on the text structure shows that several texts are arranged in a single kind of genre. However, the other texts are composed in multi-genre—meaning that each text in this kind demonstrates the features of a genre, but it accomodates other short texts with different genre. The former is named as a text with a macro genre, whereas the latter are termed as texts with a micro one. Meanwhile, the choice of words and the exploitatio of grammatical construction for the clauses of most of the texts shows weaknesses. Many academic and technical terms as well as nominalization are exploited. In addition, several texts have metaphorical words in them. This phenomenon influences the readability level of the texts. Furthermore, many clauses are constructed in complex arrangement, while some otheSrs incomplete in terms of grammar substances. This, therefore, add the negative quality of the texts. Several systemic strategies are provided to make the texts better. They can be effective models for the young writers as well as for the teachers of Bahasa Indonesia subject at elementary schools. Keywords: Genre, Cerita, Gramatika, Teks

Abstract

As one type of literature, poetry, the unit called a rhyme, is the most unique genre. The uniqueness is due to all forms of expression that stick out in rhyme. In contrary to other literary works such as short stories, novels, or plays, poems written succinctly in the form of stanza and line. Due to the density of the message to be conveyed in such a confined space, then the choice of words and forms of writing that used very unique and complex elements by accentuating of poetic sense. That means, understanding a poem as a form of literary works the same as dealing with the texts of poems that are strung in a poetic language different with language in general. The uniqueness of the language used in the poem appeared on the use of symbols words that are figurative and the use of a distorted form of writing. Deviation form is for example the accentuation of cutting sentences or lines unreasonably, the use of words and sounds are repetitive, the use of words by imitating certain sounds or the use of meaningful associative words excessively. Modern German poetry lies in the harmony of the poetic elements that build a rhyme. Thus the resulting of rhyme and diction values and its imagery is based on how the elements that form the building of rhyme which is coherent and intact. The process of reading poetry in the context of semiotic dialectic is a process of giving meaning to a text of modern poetry through a text search in order to find the code or semiotic signs. Keywords: Puisi Jerman, Modern, Semiotika

Abstract

Murwakala is the story of the puppet show that is usually used in  the Javanesse traditional seremonial namely ruwatan. Since it is oral tradition, it should be changed into the written text when it is analyzed further through the phylological process.  The main process in philological activities is determining the most reliable text form. For this purpose, it is necessary to understand particular knowledge on the author, culture and tradition that have influence on the work. This is due to the fact that the main task of philology is criticism towards text and the purpose of the text criticism is the text that is the closest version to the original text. It should be done   because usually every story teller has his own style in telling the story, that leads to the variations. In order to get the  story which has the best quality, the textual comparation should be done. This article presents those process to get the best written text. Keywords: Murwakala, Filologi, Ruwatan

Abstract

Autism patients get suffer from language disorder that can be identified from the late of speaking, the problems in processing linguistic information  and understanding the speech meaning. This triggers to the learning problems that is worsened by attention disorder. The language acquisition is also affected by the limited vocabularies, starting from lexical perception up to vocabularies that are parts of semantic acquisition. In neurolinguistics perspective, complexity of language disorder for the spectrum autism can be explained based on the perceptual information management   and the domination of his brain hemisphere. Linguistic information is processed in monoprocessing due to different hemisphere domination that happens after the process  of brain lateralizes that ends up to the base of different lexicon perceptual system  and the semantic acquisition for spectrum autism so that his expressive language skill   reaches far beyond his receptive language. This strengthen the argumentation that language pathology is based on the relation between brain and linguistic mechanism. Keywords: Neurolinguistics, Lexical Perception, Semantic Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

One of the most challenging problems for EFL students is to be able to express themselves not just grammatically but also acceptably and naturally in English in appropriate contexts.  The ability to produce acceptable and natural expressions in English is closely related to the EFL students’ competence in collocation—which words go together in normal usage. The present study provides an empirical analysis on negative transfer made by Indonesian EFL students in lexical collocation and recommends practical ways to help students improve their competence in collocation.  Data for the study was collected from essays written by 40 EFL university students majoring in English in Indonesia whose native language is Indonesian. The students were asked to write a two- to three-page essay on an assigned topic. Of 445 lexical collocation errors found in the English writing, 321 (72%) were negative transfers of Indonesian lexical collocations into English. The findings suggest the necessity of direct teaching of collocations, the use of The Collins WordbanksOnline, and the need to design bilingual collocation dictionaries. Keywords: Negative Transfer, Lexical Collocation, Indonesian Collocation, Acceptable Collocation

Abstract

Bahasa Indonesia, the national language of Indonesia, has traditionally borrowed items from the world’s classical languages, Sanskrit and Arabic. However, elements from European languages, especially English, have also massively influenced the expansion of Bahasa Indonesia’s lexicons. Massive influx of the latter  has caused a controversy among Indonesia’s linguists and other experts. Should greater loan be made from the former, as traditional source of borrowings, or should Bahasa Indonesia borrow more from the latter, as the language of modernity symbol in Indonesia? The controversy has been cleverly resolved with the adaptation and combination of elements of seemingly conflicting sources to serve specifically Indonesian objectives. In the lexical modernization of Bahasa Indonesia, despite the apparent irreconcilability of the two approaches to the use of foreign borrowings, Indonesians are effectively utilizing in a systematic manner the diverse foreign languages that their rich and varied history has made available to them. Keywords: Lexical Borrowing, Nativization, Bahasa Indonesia, Language Modernization

Abstract

This research aims to examine the effectiveness of two different vocabulary learning strategies on vocabulary retention. The first is learning words in isolation in which learners learn new words and their meanings presented in the form of word lists; and the second is learning words from context in which learners use clues in sentences in texts to generate meanings for the target words. In the instruction sessions, a group of senior high school students learning vocabulary in isolation was presented with a number of words in English and their meanings. Their task was to say and repeat the words and their meanings several times as they attempted to learn the new words and their meanings. The group of students learning words from context was presented with some texts containing the target words and was asked to find out the meanings of the target words by using clues in the texts. Recall tests were administered twice, a week and two weeks after the instruction sessions. For word retention, results of the recall tests revealed that learning words in isolation appeared to be more effective than learning words from context. Students learning words in isolation retained the target words and the meanings better than those in the other group. Keywords: Word Lists, Context, Vocabulary, Retention

Abstract

In EFL context, it is believed that developing writing skills is more complicated than developing other language skills. In order to be able to write well, the foreign language learners need to be equipped with early and continued writing experiences. Thus, the teacher’s task to develop the students’ writing skill is more complicated than the other skills. One of the most current issues to deal with such phenomena is to ferret out the writing strategy that is able to enhance the students’ writing ability as well as to reinforce their critical thinking in writing by maximizing the use of both sides of the brain (the left and the right hemispheres). In response to such issues, this paper takes into account mind mapping as a strategy in writing and elaborates the theoretical review of mind mapping for better understanding. Keywords: Mind Mapping, Writing
